A Lego Birthday Party


Growing up my parents always made a big deal about birthday parties. This is something I want to do for my kids. It isn’t always about the money you spend on the party but the little details that make it special. We have a note book for each of our children. Each birthday we get all of the guests to write or draw a little something. My parents did this for me and I love to look back at my birthdays as a child.

This year our son really wanted to have a Lego birthday party. It was difficult to find any Lego decorations or games. Here are a few things that we did to make his Lego birthday a exceptional one.


Loot Bags

–  Use a 1” circle

punch to cut out 6 circles for each bag. Attach with foam adhesives to the coloured paper bag so they are raised. Write Lego on each circle. You can also make name tags with the Lego font to attach to the bags.

Lego Activities

–  Each child received a 3 in 1 Car Lego kit. We set up a ramp in our backyard for the children to race their new Lego cars down. This was also a part of the loot bag to go home.

–  Give the children a large bin of Lego and see who can build the biggest tower in a 1 min. This is one of those games everyone can participate and really enjoy.

– Give each child a plate of Lego and vote for who made the most imaginative creation, best animal, and most creative vehicle.


Lego Snacks

– Marshmallow Lego men heads. Cut a small marshmallow in half height attach to a larger one. Dip in yellow melted chocolate. Use a food colour pen or fine tip icing to draw the Lego men faces.

– Primary coloured smarties always makes for a yummy snack and goes along with the colour scheme

– You can find

 Lego candies at your local bulk store.

– We used a lego box our son made for all the utensils

– Purchase yellow cups and used black permanent markers to draw on different lego man faces. Each one was different so the kids knew which cup was theirs.

pkins. Our son really loved helping out in making the decorations with his Lego. I hope this gives you some Lego ideas for your little ones special day.




Five tips for getting started with a Lifestyle change. #MyBetter

Last month I did my very first guest post on the Momstown Hamilton Blog. If you are in the area, pregnant, or with young kids, you should really check them out! 2012 was a huge year for me. I finally made the decision to take control of my life, loose weight and get in shape – I need to keep up with these 2 boys after all! Not only is it important for us as parents to lead a healthy lifestyle, but for us to teach our children to as well.

If you’ve been on the cusp of wanting to make a change, I’ve put together a few tips to help you get started. I hope they can help!

  • Be ready. Be committed.  Before starting any lifestyle change, you need to make sure you’re ready for it. If you’re not in a place where you’re ready to commit to something new, it can make it difficult and easier to give up. Write a list of goals. Start off slow, and work your way up.
  • Find a fitness routine that you enjoy. Finding a fitness routine or workout that you enjoy will make things easier. If you really dislike jogging, it may not be the exercise of choice to start with. Of course, you may be thinking right now “Are there exercises that are enjoyable?”. I guarantee you can find one. It might be going on walks, doing ‘Just Dance’ on the Wii, or sweating along to a good looking guy on a simple exercise video – they are out there! Once you start seeing the changes you’ll be more willing to push yourself into other routines and exercises.
  • Find an accountability partner. Starting such a huge lifestyle change alone can be hard. Try finding a friend who is willing to take this journey alongside you. Plan to work out a couple times a week together, come up with meal plans and set like minded goals. If you have a large group of people who are looking to make changes think about starting a private support group with weekly check ins and weigh-ins.
  • Get rid of the junk. Take a good look at what’s stocked in your kitchen. Clear your cupboards of all the cookies, get rid of the tubs of ice cream in your freezer. Not having unhealthy snacks available makes it easier to reach for the good stuff. Stock up on fruits and veggies, and low calorie snacks.
  • Take a before picture. There is nothing better than having a before picture to compare yourself to once the weight starts coming off. Not everyone thinks of taking one because they don’t necessarily want to remember themselves that way. It doesn’t have to be for anyone’s eyes but your own, but something you will really appreciate having once the time comes. Personally I kept one of the worst pictures of me as my desktop background for a year, it helped remind me why I was making the change, even on the bad days.
Remember that any lifestyle change can take time, and again lots of commitment. There are ups and downs, and slip-ups along the way but you will get there. Mostly importantly? You need to believe in yourself, and that you can do it – because you can!

Motivational Monday – Challenge accepted!

A new month, a new blogger, a new challenge! That Mom Tammy is officially on board for Motivational Mondays. While I will still be writing the posts (for the most part) she will be weighing in each week. For our first month we decided on a bit of a competition as our challenge. Our goal is to workout 5 times per week. We will be recording both our exercise and points progress online each day and there’s twist – for any day of a skipped workout, or not tracking, you get a .5lb disadvantage added on to your total. WHOA. And the prize? The one who looses the most weight at the end of the month gets to drop their kids off at the losers house for an entire day. I am SO winning this challenge!

March Challenge So far I’m ahead, I’m down 3.7slbs this week (!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and Tammy is down .2lbs – still a loss! I have to remember though that when Tammy wants to bring it, she does. Our last challenge that we set for each other she dropped the weight way faster than I did.  It’s going to be a fun, tough and challenging month, but something I think we both need to get back on track.

Day one of 6am a success. #MyBetter

Yesterday I challenged myself with starting to wake up at 6am so that I had no excuse to not have time to workout. Not only did I challenge myself, but I challenged That Mom Tammy too. Last night, (while doing the stairs – go US!) we vowed that we would message each other in the morning and make sure we were both up, starting the day right.

As hard as it was to initially roll myself out of bed, I’m glad I did it. It was the perfect way to start the day. It was quiet and I didn’t once get interrupted by a “Mom, I need this NOW”. I think I can actually do this 6am thing. Maybe I will even become a ‘Morning Person’. Maybe. 😉

Motivational Monday – Week 61 – Hello 6am??

If you’ve been following this blog, you know that it’s always been important to me to share both sides of my weight-loss journey. The good and the bad. The successes, and the falling short. Put it all out there because this is what’s real. It’s not always easy – sometimes it’s down right hard. There are moments when I want to throw in the towel, go back to my old ways of not caring. Luckily it doesn’t last long, because I know that even during these down times, these bad moments, I can do it.

I feel like I’ve been in a bit of a slump the past few months. While there have been little losses here and there, there have also been gains. I go from doing really well with eating healthy and tracking my food one week, to stuffing my face with chips and not paying attention the next. It’s just so easy to not pay attention. My biggest problem is not finding the time to work out and be more active. I’ve been so busy in every aspect of my life that I just don’t make the time. Excuses, excuses, right? I miss running. I miss having that drive to get myself moving. I know that all it will take is to jump back in, so that is what I’m going to do.

Time is definitely an issue with me right now, I’m swamped. Really, really swamped. I can only come up with one solution, and even though it’s something that makes me cringe, I know it’s what needs to be done. I need to start waking up early. Like 6am early. To workout. I am probably one of the worst morning people you’ll ever meet, so this is not going to be easy. It start’s tomorrow.

I think this will be a big step into finding that groove again. Remembering how amazing I felt when I was being active and seeing the results I’d been looking for. I had more energy. I was happier. I was always reading and willing to take on the world. I need to find this Karen again:


So here is to another week. Wish me luck with the 6am wake-ups!

Motivational Monday – Week 60 – Welcome @ThatMomTammy!

Happy Tuesday! A day late, but for good reason – yesterday was Family Day! I thought I would put the blog and my thousand emails on hold for the day to hang out with my boys, and go visit my sister. Well worth it! It was nice to be somewhat unplugged for the day.

Last weeks tracking paid off, I’m down 2.7lbs. Most days I remembered to post my tracking on the Facebook page with some helpful reminders from a certain follower (Thanks Stacey!). I have a pretty busy week ahead of me, so I won’t be doing any new challenges for myself other than just continuing to track and make healthy choices.

If you read the blog last Friday, you would have noticed that I am no longer the only blogger on That Mom Blog! I’m so excited to introduce Tammy – a friend, motivator and now weekly contributor! With everything I do I’ve found it hard to keep up on content some weeks, and even harder to post the kid related posts that I started this blog for. Tammy will be sharing recipes, kids crafts, and w hopping onto the weekly weigh-ins as well!

Tammy and I started this life style change together by joining Weight Watchers last January. We’ve had ups and downs together and separate along the way, constantly motivating each other to keep going. She has been a big part of my success, and I hope to continue to be a part of hers! She is my running buddy, the one who makes me get off my ass on the days I`d rather sit around and do nothing. What I love about her the most is that she is as random and impulsive as I am. The friend who decided to do the stairs with me at 11:30pm on New Years Eve rather than sitting around watching the countdown on TV.

Over the next couple of weeks we will be making some changes to the blog`s look, and some of the features. We`ll be setting Monthly challenges to keep each other accountable, as well as any readers who want to follow along. I`m so excited for this new collaboration  and I hope you are too!
