Potty Training

I think I can finally say it – H is POTTY TRAINED! YIPPEE!!! What an adventure that was.
There is so much out there when it comes to potty training. Advice from all different spectrum’s. Do you let them tell you when they need to go? Do you get them to sit every 1/2 hour until the go? Do you get them a special potty watch to help remind them? There are so many options.
I can’t tell you how many different things we tried with H over the past year (maybe even longer)! It started with reading him some potty themed books. Then we went out and bought him one of those fancy, lid lifts up, seat is cushioned, even has a holder for toilet paper potties, and all he wanted to do was play with it. He wanted to take every piece apart, and put it all back together. Who wants to pee in something SO FUN? Not H.
Next, we went to Ikea to get one of the $3.00, nothing but a pot to sit on potty, and that seemed to work a little better. We would encourage him to sit, and give him a sticker every time he went pee. We even got him to poop on it too a few times. I thought we were well on our way to having one t out of diapers, and then it stopped. He was over it. The bribes and rewards were no longer working.
One day on a hike in the woods with a friend and our kids, her little guy who is just shy of a year older than H, had to pee. H watched as his Mom brought him over to a tree, took down his pants, and then watched him ‘water’ the tree. Instantly he was all about following suit, but trying to teach your boy how to properly pee standing up, was not so easy, and the event ended in wet pants. Regardless, peeing standing up was new and exciting to him, and I wasn’t going to let that excitement fizzle. As soon as Daddy got home that night, I told him he had a job. HE was going to teach H how to do it. That was it. Once he got that, he was all over it. No more wet diapers! One step down, one to go.
That second step was not as easy. We seemed to try everything. We tried the rewards. We tried a hilarious pirate potty book. We tried the walking around naked trick, but he would hold it in until he got a diaper on before bed, OR it went on the floor. Ew. We as parents were getting frustrated, and he was getting frustrated. All the pressure on both sides was making us crazy. Finally, we decided to drop it. When he was ready, he would tell us. And that’s exactly what finally worked.
Just a week after we dropped the pressure on him, he told his daddy that he wanted to sit on the toilet, and he went. After a week of that, we brought out the ‘big boy undies’, and thrilled to say, there was only one accident after that.
Last night was the first night that he went all night with just his ‘big boy undies’, and I can finally say, he is officially Potty Trained!
I guess that sometimes it’s just better to let your kids do what they need to do. While we can encourage them to make such a bug change, ultimately they need to be ready. I need to make sure to remember this rule when it comes time for Q to train.
Have you toilet trained your child yet? What worked in your house?

  1. I suppose one has to have a built in hose in order to understand the thrill of wetting down a tree. LOL

We did a completely different approach to toileting not involving rewards or things like that. We did diaper free.

  2. hey, thanks for the advice! im currently trying to get my daughter potty trained. we are doing the same things as you. bought the fancy toilet that even flushes! no go, its a toy now. tried the naked thing… lets just say i have carpet and that wasnt going to keep happening!. so now ive just said “ALL WELL”. ill bring her to the potty after naps and bedtime and before but thats all now. she can tell me when she has to go pee, so i know she understands she just dosent like the potty. So im just going to take your advise and let her tell me when shes ready! Thanks again, and good timing!
